Really fantastic 1912 asymmetrical Holophane 10" Shade - shown w/Antique Brass Hardware & Solid Brown woven wire.
This asymmetrical Holophane shade was popular in the early 20th century. They are characterized by its distinctive design, which features an asymmetrical shape. The introduction of asymmetrical glass shades by Holophane was a response to the need for more efficient lighting solutions. Asymmetrical designs allowed for better distribution of light, focusing illumination where it was needed while minimizing glare and wasted light. This was particularly useful for industrial and street lighting, where effective lighting distribution was crucial.
Holophane is a manufacturer of lighting-related products founded in 1898 in London, England. The hallmark of Holophane luminaires, or lighting fixtures, is the glass reflector/refractor. The glass prisms provide a combination of uplight and downlight to illuminate evenly without creating dark spots or glare. This ribbed glass shade/reflector, called "Holophane" is iconic in vintage antique lighting.
